Who Knew You Could Draw Photorealistic Portraits with Ball Point Pen!

Read Now

We loved seeing this step-by-step portrait drawn in only ball point pen.  It's an article at Empty Easel that takes you through the complete process, even telling you what colored ball point pens to use to create a realistic skin tone.  Does it seem unbelievable that it's ball point pen?  I guess you have to try it to actually know it's true.  Obviously, you'll need a lot of patience and a gentle touch to create a photorealistic portrait like the one in the article that you see below.

Each week, our art staff picks an art supply to talk about, letting you know what the product does, why you'd want to have it in your supplies and what to think about when you purchase it.  If you're curious to learn more about any art supply or product.  Let us know by sending us an email at this link.  We'll be sure to do a feature on it

This week, our art staff pick is:  WOODEN BOXES TO DECORATE!  Small pencil box: $2.99. Medium Rectangle: $9.99. Large square: $7.69

Picture

What can you do with it, and how does it stand out?

These unfinished wood boxes can be painted with acrylics, decorated with decoupage, or embellished however you like! They close with a latch and metal hinge, and are great for storing art supplies or special possessions. They would make a fun project and a unique gift that can really be customized!

Any tips or techniques for using it? Likes/ dislikes?

I like using acrylic paints to add floral patterns on my wooden boxes! I recommend painting the box with a primer like gesso first, then drawing out your design on the box. When I'm finished painting, I like to seal the outside with a few coats of spray varnish. Some cool ideas for decorating might be to use stencils, try paint pens for adding lettering, or use wood burning tools to draw your design! I like that the dimensions of these boxes fit my prismacolor colored pencils perfectly. :)
Picture

Do we stock it regularly, or is it a special find?

This is a closeout deal, so get them while we have them.  Small pencil box: $2.99. Medium Rectangle: $9.99. Large square: $7.69

Deals! Deals! Deals! I love our closeout pencils because they're soooo cheap! These silver Verithin pencils are only 10 cents each! They feature an extra hard silver colored lead great for creating sharp thin lines. They are great for writing on black paper, adding metallic accents to your drawings, and are especially popular for their ability to mark on metal. They also make great stocking stuffers! Silver is my favorite, but there are many other 10 cent colored pencils to choose from- these aren't on our website yet, so make sure you request them via our Curbside Pick Up Order Form!

Any tips or techniques for using it? Likes/ dislikes?

Great for sharp lines, too hard and scratchy for soft blending techniques.

Velvet Paper Perfect as a Photo Backdrop:  Weekly Staff Pick

Each week, our art staff picks an art supply to talk about, letting you know what the product does, why you'd want to have it in your supplies and what to think about when you purchase it.  If you're curious to learn more about any art supply or product.  Let us know by sending us an email at this link.  We'll be sure to do a feature on it.

This week, our art staff pick is:  VELVET PAPER.  Red, black, white, 20"x27", $2.99 each.

Picture

What can you do with it, and how does it stand out?

This paper has a fuzzy flocked surface that imitates velvet. When I'm not working at IBF, I run a vintage re-sale micro-business, and I like using this paper as a backdrop when photographing small products for my website or instagram. It doesn't really reflect light, and provides a soft surface for delicate objects to sit on.  (Micro business is Vortex Vintage @vortexvtg).

Any tips or techniques for using it? Likes/ dislikes?

It does tend to scuff easily- I always buy a couple sheets so I have a back up if I damage one too much. It also attracts lint- especially the black- but it cleans up beautifully using a lint roller or packing tape.

Do we stock it regularly, or is it a special find?

Yes.  $2.99/sheet in red, black and white.

Link to buy it on our art supply site:

You can buy it.  Please request it in a curbside order at this link.

Paper Punches Aren't Just For Paper Crafts: Weekly Staff Pick

Each week, our art staff picks an art supply to talk about, letting you know what the product does, why you'd want to have it in your supplies and what to think about when you purchase it.  If you're curious to learn more about any art supply or product.  Let us know by sending us an email at this link.  We'll be sure to do a feature on it.

This week, our art staff pick is: PAPER PUNCHES!

Picture

What can you do with it, and how does it stand out?

Paper punches are a great way to elevate any paper craft project, I use them to die-cut shapes for signs & price tags for my small business, as well as card-making, and collaging. I used to think they were just cheesy scrapbooking tools, but now I use them all the time for a wide range of projects. I love buying used ones from IBF because they are 50-90% cheaper than buying them new! Just make sure to check that they are still sharp enough to cut cleanly- many of our used punches are in new condition, some are a bit more used than others.
Picture

Any tips or techniques for using it? Likes/ dislikes?

If your punch starts to feel stiff, punch some shapes out of wax paper to decrease the friction on the die. If your paper is very thin or soft, add a second stiffer sheet and punch through both at the same time for a clean cut.
Picture

Do we stock it regularly, or is it a special find?

This item is a closeout - get it while you can!

Such a Little Easel with Such a Big Advantage:  Weekly Staff Pick

This week, our art staff pick is:  RICHESON TABLE EASEL!

Picture

What can you do with it, and how does it stand out?

This wooden tabletop easel is great for using with smaller scale artwork if you need something that doesn't take up a lot of space! It's very sturdy and does a good job holding panels and canvas firmly in place while you're painting or drawing.
Picture
Picture

Any tips or techniques for using it? Likes/ dislikes?

If you like to paint small - I've found that this easel fits comfortably with many sizes, and it's adjustable for art up to 11" tall! Unlike some other easels, it's not collapsible - but I find that it actually helps with the sturdiness. (I've gotten "foldable" easels in the past and had them fold while I'm working on something - that's no fun!) A bonus is that since the footprint is only 5 1/4" x 6", so if I need to put it away it doesn't take up much storage space either!  Height is 17 1/4”.

Do we stock it regularly, or is it a special find?

Yes.  $14.99 ea.

3 Reason to Paint on Wood with Gouache!  Who Knew You Could Paint Gouache on Wood?  Here's How to Do It!

Read Now

I think traditionally the paint you think of to paint upon wood is acrylic paint.  Next, it would be oil paint.  After that, you might think of tempera paint.

You'd never think of watercolor paint and we never thought it was a good idea to use gouache which is like an opaque (non transparent) watercolor paint.  Gouache dries with a velvety chalky texture and is easily ruined after painting it because it can easily be reactivated and run with a drop or water or scratched by anything bumping against it.  But if you know a few things, you can actually paint with it on wood and it be no problem......and actually quite fun.

Why would you want to use it to paint on wood?  Here are 3 reasons:
  1. It's more forgiving, easier to paint with and easier to clean up than acrylic paint
  2. It would be great to use to paint DIY wooden holiday ornaments or decorations
  3. It would be great to paint on those wooden plaques---- that are like a frame and canvas in one----with gouache as a DIY holiday gift

In this article on "Bujo Babe" by Hana, she gives you the ins and outs of how to paint gouache on wood.  Here's what you need to start out with:
Supplies You’ll Need:
  • A wooden panel
  • Gouache Paint and Brushes
  • Gesso and applicator brushes
  • Wax (for sealing)

Read the full article at this link.
