How to Use Jacquard Pearl Ex pigments to Add Extra Shine and Glitter to Many Holiday Art Projects:  Weekly Staff Pick!

Read Now

Each week, our art staff picks an art supply to talk about, letting you know what the product does, why you'd want to have it in your supplies and what to think about when you purchase it.  If you're curious to learn more about any art supply or product.  Let us know by sending us an email at this link.  We'll be sure to do a feature on it.

This week, our art staff pick is:  JACQUARD PEARL EX PIGMENTS!

Picture

What can you do with it, and how does it stand out?

These metallic and iridescent powder pigments are very versatile and can be used in a number of different ways. Add them to your paint colors, or to clear acrylic mediums. Use them to glitterify your block prints, stamps or watercolors... They are only $2.99 per jar and come in a large variety of colors, as well as interference colors.

Any tips or techniques for using it? Likes/ dislikes?

One of the ways that I use these pigments the most is by incorporating them into my encaustic wax paintings. Once the wax is mostly hardened but still warm, I buff on the pigments over the top of the wax to create a metallic finish. Another way I use it, is by buffing it onto my wax surface and then going over it with a shellac burn, which will create a lovely metallic cell-pour sort of finish.
Picture

Do we stock it regularly, or is it a special find?

Yes.  You can buy it on our website at the link below or you can request it in a curbside order.

Link to buy it on our art supply site:

Paint on Leather Shoes, Old Hand Bags Or More For Very Special Holiday Gifts!  Staff Pick of the Week: Angelus Leather Paints!

Read Now

Each week, our art staff will pick an art supply to talk about, letting you know what the product does, why you'd want to have it in your supplies and what to think about when you purchase it.  If you're curious to learn more about any art supply or product.  Let us know by sending us an email at this link.  We'll be sure to do a feature on it.

This week, our art staff pick is:  ANGELUS LEATHER PAINTS!

Picture
Picture

What can you do with it, and how does it stand out?

This paint can be used to paint leather, shoes, canvas, and fabric. I think it's especially cool when used to rejuvenate items you may already own - like this leather bag I bought at a yard sale! It's advantage over typical acrylic paint is that it is self leveling - meaning the paint layer sits smoothly on the surface.

Any tips or techniques for using it? Likes/ dislikes?

I love the range of colors that these paints come in, and how smoothly they stay on leather. They pretty much come in all the colors of the rainbow, plus metallics and fluorescents!

To get started, I recommend prepping your surface with the 'Angelus Leather Preparer & Deglazer', which you can apply with cotton balls. This cleans the surface, helps remove factory finish if there is one, and allows the paint to adhere properly.

This paint works best in multiple thin coats, allowing the paint to dry in between coats. (Don't worry, since it's acrylic based it doesn't take too long!)

One tip for using: The paints come with a brush attached to the cap, which could be helpful for covering large surfaces - but I recommend getting another brush to use as it may be easier to hold, and give you more control over the amount of paint you're using.
Picture

Do we stock it regularly, or is it a special find?

Yes, we stock it all the time!

3 Tips On How to Make Your Best Art From Portland Landscape Artist Anna K. McDermott

Read Now

On landscape artist, Anna K. McDermott's Instagram profile, it says, "Hike.  Paint.  Repeat."  Since her feed is filled with her gorgeous photo realistic paintings that she paints from the photos she takes on her many hikes, you know this is her way of life.  In fact, if you read the title of her instagram account it says, "Rather be hiking."  Her art has been exhibited all around Oregon and has even won the "People's Choice Award" in juried art shows.  Today, she gives us 3 great tips on how to make your best art and we suspect these tips and techniques are how she has become so adept at her landscape painting..
Picture

Tell us briefly about your art:

I paint detailed landscapes from photos I take on hikes. I find hiking to be healing for my physical self as well as inspirational for my art. I paint landscapes to capture a place at that moment in hopes of people seeing it and valuing the outdoors, the need for conservation, and to resonate with your own memories of time spent in public lands.

What is your main medium of art?

Painting: Acrylic and watercolor

What are your website and links?

Website:  www.annakmcdermott.com
Instagram: @mcdermott.anna

Please share your techniques & tips with us:

#1   Find someone who knows a little about art to critique you, then find someone who doesn’t. Critique is so important because it lets you know what other people are seeing when they see your art. Sometimes, it is hard to know for yourself what you are looking at after staring at it for so long.

#2   Art takes time. Let it. You can have a deadline but make sure to give yourself more time than you think it will require.

#3   I minimally sketch out my painting with an under painting in a wash of either yellow or French grey. Pencil far too often shows up through the paint.

The Best Traveling Art Supply: Derwent Water Brush! Our Weekly Staff Pick!

We are starting a new weekly feature on our blog!  Hooray!  For now on, each week, our art staff will pick an art supply to talk about, letting you know what the product does, why you'd want to have it in your supplies and what to think about when you purchase it.  If you're curious to learn more about any art supply or product.  Let us know by sending us an email at this link.  We'll be sure to do a feature on it.

This week, we start out with the best traveling art supply because you could take with you wherever you go:  DERWENT WATER BRUSHES!
Picture

What can you do with it, and how does it stand out?

This little water brush or any similar brand is a must have for your travel art set! It’s water reservoir eliminates the need for carrying around a water container. I always tote one of these with me, along with my watercolor pencils or travel watercolor palette.

Any tips or techniques for using it? Likes/ dislikes?

There are a lot of different brands and styles out there but I would recommend investing in one of the higher quality water brushes, so it’s holds up and you don’t have issues with leakage. I would also getting a size/style of brush tip that is the most universal to carry around with you. I love the small-medium sized round. Also, carry a rag to clean the brush in between colors, or cut a small bit of sponge to stick in your color palette. Squeeze the brush and dab again the rag/sponge to clean.

Do we stock it regularly, or is it a special find?

Yes, we stock it all the time!

You can request it in a curbside pickup order by clicking this link.

Art Is Good For Your Brain!  Portland, Mixed Medium Artist Sean P. Lambert Exclaims!

Read Now

Mixed medium mural and canvas artist, Sean P. Lambert lives and works in Portland, Oregon.  He has been building community with art projects and collaborations with other artists.  His colorful abstract paintings with wild explosions of shapes and lines give it movement and play that keep your mind attentive and active.  It's no wonder he advises that art is good for your brain.  Some of his Portland claims to fame have been to win the 2018 Nike BIKETOWN Design Challenge, in which bikes were custom wrapped with Lambert’s artwork and to have a series of murals, enlivening boarded-up storefronts, featured in the Willamette Week’s coverage of the Portland Street Art scene during the pandemic in May 2020.
Picture

Tell us briefly about your art:

Although I'm best known for myabstract renderings on paper and canvas, utilizing a bright color palette in a variety of mediums, My dedication to color, form and balance is a fresh and vibrant take on contemporary creativity. Unafraid to mashup imagery with my more familiar milieu, my explorative nature comes full circle in a variety of pieces wherein the viewer can interpret the ranging lines and shapes as recognizable pieces of a larger continuous whole. With donations of my work over the last year raising in excess of $15,000 for such organizations as Cascade AIDS Project, Our House of Portland, Camp Fire Columbia, Don’t Shoot PDX, Beyond Black CDC, Equal Justice Initiative and others, I readily contributes to efforts that recognize the importance of the arts in combating the negative forces impacting our most vulnerable communities.

What is your main medium of art?

Primarily mixed media on paper and canvas, silk screen printing and murals.

What are your website and links?

Please share your techniques & tips with us:

My techniques range from utilization of basic templates to feng shui color theory. I try to incorporate a range of materials, imagery and approaches to my artwork, whether I'm making prints, freehand drawing or painting a mural.

My hot tip: Do the work. The more you practice your craft, the better off you'll be. Art is good for your brain.

Thankful Tree, Unicorns, and a Gratitude GIVEAWAY!

Read Now

One of my favorite November traditions here is our Thankful Tree. I always love watching the bare branches be filled out with leaves that represent a wide variety of things to be thankful for, from both our customers and employees. Taking time to be mindful of the things we have to be thankful for is so important. We love to encourage that here all year round, not just in November. I have always noticed a difference here in our work flow when the Thankful Tree is up though, it's like we start the day off on the right foot.

This year has been such a tumble of chaos. I find myself searching for the things to be thankful for more often than in years past. There are so many wild things in 2020 that are discouraging and heartbreaking. It's challenging to find gratitude in the midst of all that is happening in our world right now. I personally feel that it is worth hunting for in the midst of it all. I look forward to the other side of this era but I am challenging myself to stop and take notice of all that there is to be thankful for along the way. There is so much to learn, to grow from, and to not ever repeat. In my own personal life, gratitude always produces growing and I find it to be valuable in really... strange, but good, ways. So I am going to hunt for it and find all of it that I can this year. Do you want to join me?

I've been contemplating how we even have a thankful tree at the shop this year, maybe I will find a way to do a virtual version of one soon. In the meantime, I've dreamed up something fun that will hopefully spark some inspiration. Whether you win it or not, I hope that you find and create your own adventure of gratitude. We are so thankful for all of you this year!! Your support & love of our funky little shop means so much to all 16 of us. Thank you for keeping us here, keeping the lights on, and keeping our dreams alive.
Stay safe and keep making lots of art!
Sincerely,
Prairie

Choose-Your-Own-Adventure In Gratitude Giveaway

Hold my coffee cup- gotta grab my magnifying glass....I can't even count how many items are in these pictures! Of course there is a unicorn theme because they're not only cool & mysterious creatures but they are also very rare to find. I thought it was a perfect theme since gratitude for things in 2020 is (possibly) about as mystical as a unicorn in real life. The magic is always real~ whether it is being thankful or chasing unicorns!

Fair Warning: There will be a mini adventure to follow for the lucky winner and a partner of your choice. I can't say much about that adventure, because that's top secret. I can say that it will be fun, involve gratitude, and that you can choose your own path. Remember those Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books as a kid? I'm imagining it kind of like that but it might not involve as many sharks or wild rides. It may include painting, drawing, sculpting, writing, and other artistic forms of expressing gratitude but of course you will get to choose which path you take. Official rules for entry and sneak peek at the adventure will be listed down below.

I'm including 2 camper enamel mugs with a shout-out in the giveaway to another small business that I personally am thankful for this year. Rational Unicorn Legal Services has helped me with several things this year and I appreciate their practical and fun approach to business law. There are often jokes and puns mixed in with business law, so of course I love that too. My favorite thing about them is that they are a B-Corp and give back to the community. They work with many artists and creatives to help them build solid legal foundations under their dreams of business. Check out their series of workshops called "The More You Glow." They are affordable, or pay what you can, and focused on many things that you need to know being in business as an artist. If you do not know what a B-Corp is then I would recommend learning more about them and finding some local ones to support.

OFFICIAL ENTRY RULES & SNEAK PEEK

 To enter:
1.Tell us how you will creatively express gratitude using these supplies.
2. Give a shoutout to a small local business you’re especially thankful for this year. (If you cant decide it’s ok to list more than one!)
3. Tag someone you will share this gift with and set a game plan to find creative ways to express gratitude together- even if you don’t win this, it's is a good idea!
We mostly use Instagram these days but you can tag a friend & share on any social media, then email us a picture of your posts. If you are not on social media at all that is ok too, just email us your entry and we will give a shout out to your favorite local businesses on ours. This also means that kids can enter but only with permission from parents included in the entry submission.

Deadline:
We will choose the winner by drawing a name from a hat on 11/13 and announce the winner on IG.
You will have 30 days to follow your adventure and report back to us.

Contest winner agrees to do the following:
1- Follow the adventure inside the box. This will include several projects that are specific tasks. You may even make it a contest or game if you'd like. 2-Have fun in the adventure! Be inspired! Find gratitude in the midst of 2020!
3-Share the adventure with us! This can be videos or pictures of your process & finished tasks. It’s ok if you’re shy and don’t want to show yourself or be tagged but we will tag your page or links if you are ok with that.
